A Life-Changing Wildlife Encounter
Gorilla trekking in Uganda represents one of the world's most extraordinary wildlife experiences, offering visitors the rare opportunity to encounter mountain gorillas in their natural habitat within the ancient rainforests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
This profound experience brings humans face-to-face with our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom, creating moments of connection and understanding that transform perspectives on wildlife conservation and our place in the natural world.
The mountain gorilla population represents one of conservation's greatest success stories, with numbers slowly recovering from near-extinction through dedicated protection efforts, community involvement, and sustainable tourism initiatives. Uganda is home to nearly half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population, making it the premier destination for this bucket-list wildlife experience.
Understanding Mountain Gorillas
Discover the unique traits, social life, and survival of these incredible primates
The Species and Their Habitat
Mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) represent one of the world's most endangered primate species, with fewer than 1,100 individuals remaining in the wild across their limited range in the Virunga Mountains of Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
These magnificent creatures are distinguished from their lowland cousins by their longer, thicker fur adapted to high-altitude living, their larger size, and their exclusive terrestrial lifestyle in montane forest environments.
Physical Characteristics
Adult male silverbacks can weigh up to 220 kilograms and stand 1.8 meters tall when upright. Their distinctive silver-grey back hair develops around age 15.
Social Structure
Mountain gorillas live in family groups of 8–30 individuals led by a dominant silverback male, including several adult females and their offspring.
Diet & Activities
Primarily herbivorous, they spend most of the day foraging for leaves, stems, bark, and fruits from over 140 plant species in their environment.
